Camp Oakhurst is operated by the New York Service for the Handicapped and is accredited by the American Camp Association and licensed by the New Jersey State Department of Health. All campers must provide medical information and be personally interviewed by one of our caseworkers for consideration. Scholarships are available. Summer camp/respite, year-round respite, and day recreation (day recreation for Monmouth County residents only) services are also available.
Everyone, including children and adults who have physical and developmental disabilities, needs a time away from home. Camp Oakhurst offers our clients a fun-filled summer program and year-round residential services in a place where it's easy to participate in activities, make friends, feel accepted, and gain independence.
Camp Oakhurst, located along the scenic New Jersey Atlantic coast (55 miles from New York City), serves individuals with physical and developmental disabilities. Disabilities include those that effect movement, coordination, and stamina, as well as autism spectrum disorders, and include Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Spina Bifida, Post Polio, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Traumatic Brain Injury and similar conditions. Campers must possess expressive and receptive communication skills and must exhibit behavior that is appropriate for group living. Individuals who use a wheelchair or who require assistance with activities of daily living are welcome. Most special diets can be accommodated.
